Wang Bingzhang, lifelong democracy activist. Mr. Wang was allegedly kidnapped in Vietnam by Chinese State Security police in 2002. He was taken to China where he was sentenced to life in prison after a closed door trial. Mr. Wang is 62 years old and in poor health. “It is unjust and incomprehensible that a state that seeks to part of the international community treats a democracy dissident in such a shameful manner.” Timothy Cooper, Director, Free China Movement.
Wang Bingzhang was a medical doctor who went to Canada for graduate studies at McGill University. Upon completing his PhD program, he decided to gave up his career in medicine to dedicate his life to pro-democracy Chinese activism. He moved to New York where he founded China Spring magazine and co-founded several of the first overseas Chinese democratic parties. Dr. Wang spent the next 20 years of his life organizing and promoting pro-democracy activities in North America and around the world.
The Chinese Communist Party’s concern of his activities eventually led to his arrest. In June 2002, while traveling in Vietnam with fellow activists, Dr. Wang was kidnapped and brought to China. He was then arrested and charged with espionage and terrorism. In a trial that lasted half a day where no evidence was presented, he was convicted and sentenced to life-imprisonment in solitary confinement. His sentence is the harshest ever levied on a political prisoner since 1989. It has now been six year that Dr. Wang languishes in prison where he has developed several serious medical conditions. He has also suffered three strokes. He is permitted one family visitation a month, each session lasting only half and hour. During these visit, Dr. Wang and his family are separated by glass panels and bars, and must communicate on the phone under the surveillance of several prison guards.
Dr. Wang’s case has won the support of the Canadian and American government. The United Nations and Amnesty International have also called for his release.
